The Power of the Employee Futures Fund

Submitted by: Megan Fretto, Director of Human Resources

At Kendal at Ithaca, we believe that learning is a lifelong journey—one that not only enriches individual lives but strengthens our entire community. This belief is deeply rooted in our Quaker values, especially the commitment to continuous learning and the nurturing of each person’s Inner Light. Through the Employee Futures Fund (EFF), our residents, staff, and donors have created a tangible expression of that belief—an investment in people, potential, and purpose.

Megan meets with recipients of Employee Futures Fund

The Employee Futures Fund provides educational grants to staff who seek to grow in their professions through degrees, certifications, and specialized training. These opportunities empower our team members to expand their skills, advance in their careers, and contribute to a stronger long-term care field overall. By supporting education, we also ensure Kendal remains a place that attracts and retains top talent—people whose dedication, compassion, and expertise shape the heart of our community every day.

The fund’s strength lies in the generosity of those who give—through individual contributions and resident-led efforts like the Downsizing Assistance Committee Sale, which channels proceeds directly into the fund. Together, these acts of giving create a ripple effect of growth and gratitude that touches every corner of our organization.

As of 2025, the Employee Futures Fund distributed funds to the following staff members to  pursue higher education and professional credentials:

  • Shjon A., Main Dining Manager – earned his Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts from Tompkins Cortland Community College (Dec 2024)
  • Megan F., Director of Human Resources – achieved her SHRM-SCP certification
  • Patricia L., C-House Nurse Manager – completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University at Buffalo
  • Hanah B., Social Worker – earned her Master of Social Work from Keuka College
  • JoAnn D., Residential Care LPN – finishing her Associate’s Degree in Nursing at TC3 this December (RN)
  • Nikko H., Residential Care Assistant – currently studying Social Work at Tompkins Cortland Community College
  • Jennifer L, Residential Care RN – pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing Leadership from SUNY Delhi
  • Samantha F., Director of Social Work – enrolled in Healthcare Administration at SUNY Oswego
  • Violet M., Staff RN – studying for her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at SUNY Binghamton

Each of these stories represents a shared investment in the future—of our staff, our residents, and the broader long-term care profession. Together, we are not only shaping careers but also sustaining the compassionate, educated, and forward-thinking workforce that ensures Kendal at Ithaca continues to thrive.
