Kendal at Ithaca Updates for April 14, 2020

As evidence of a plateau effect in NYS with respect to virus infections grows, it begins to feel like a waiting game is underway. Logistical planning is accomplished; some urgency has retreated from the situation. Routines are emerging. What to do now ?

Novel approaches to providing diversions, wellness programming and continuing education are the norm. You might be curious about the opportunities available for Kendal at Ithaca residents through the in-house TV channel. Our photo shows the weekly Kendal Events schedule, but since it’s an eye-test, we’ll share what’s on it.

Wellness and fitness classes continue by video. At 11:00, Monday, Wednesday and Friday it’s a 20 minute workout. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, pull your chair up to the TV for “Chair Aerobics”. To round out the morning at 11:45, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, “Down to the Core” provides a core -strengthening workout. On alternate days, it’s a little less strenuous with yoga. The Fitness Center itself continues to be open, with strict rules about single person use and disinfecting immediately after use. Residents can sign up in advance for a convenient timeslot to exercise solo.

Late afternoon sessions this week are inspired by history. On Tuesday and Thursday, courtesy of BBS DOCS, residents can begin study of the Crusades with Episodes 1 and 2. A Ted Talk on Wednesday begins with “The History of the World in 18 Minutes” by David Christian. Following this compressed version of the world’s history, is an interactive Zoom discussion. The week wraps up on Friday with A Great Courses segment “Decisive Battles of World history.”

Finally, every evening at 7 PM, there is a movie. Beginning Tuesday and through the following evenings, the lineup is “The King and I”, “City Slickers”, “Book Club”, “Birdsong” and “Rain Man.” If you  don’t fancy any of these, there are plenty of DVDs available in the library, which continues to be open.

Why not get in touch and share what you’ve been doing to stay well and engaged ? We’d love to hear from you.
